Malcesine Castle
Malcesine Castle
It rises impressively overhanging Lake Garda
Malcesine Castle for those arriving from the lake or by land immediately attracts attention with its grandeur and its pentagonal tower 31 meters high dominates the entire landscape of Malcesine. You do not have a date of construction of the original stronghold, probably in Lombard, but there have been many alterations, modifications and restorations that have occurred over time by the various masters of the place. Destroyed and rebuilt with more attention to fulfill his duty as a defender of the village, the castle owes its definition of Scaliger Castle to the lords of Verona the Della Scala that dominated the area in 128. Passed to the Republic of Venice, which potentiated its defense system by the lake, it was then the French and the Austrians in 178 which brought important changes to the defensive structure. Since then it has remained as it is today. The castle is divided into lower and upper hall and is formed by three courtyards, in the second of which is a bust of Goethe. Its oldest part is formed by the boundary stone battlements square, the central features dovetail merlons. From the courtyard there is access to a small balcony with a beautiful view of the bay. In the castle there is a small museum with collections of natural and historical relics.
