Castle of Ponti sul Mincio
The medieval castle of Ponti sul Mincio dominates the town from the hill, built in the second half of the thirteenth century by Leonardo della Scala, called Mastino I, who comes to power in Verona and is named Capitano del Popolo.
The Castle of Ponti sul Mincio surrounds the top of a low hill with an enclosure interspersed with four towers, near the entrance door we find a high main tower for the control of the river. One of these towers has a different aspect from the original one, in fact it seems raised and strengthened, so much so that today it has the shape of a bell tower with a clock inserted looking towards the inhabited area. Ponti is part of the Scaligeri territories and falls within the strategic plan for the military defense of the territories south of Mantua and west of Milan; perhaps it was part of the Scaliger Seraglio‘s defensive system.
