The amphitheater of Rivoli Veronese has a perfect semicircular shape with a central mountain Castello.
HISTORY OF RIVOLI VERONESE
The geographical position of Rivoli Veronese meant that it was a strategic position to control both the passages by land than by river. On its territory there are two fossil localities of significant scientific and cultural importance, Monte La Mesa and Rivoli Veronese, both dating back to the early Pleistocene, 1.75 million years the site of Monte La Mesa and 2.2 million years the site of Rivoli Veronese. The territory of Rivoli has always been a place of passage along the lines of communication between northern Europe and the Mediterranean , at first there were the tracks Paleolithic, then the Via Claudia Augusta Roman Empire and the imperial road in the Middle Ages. From archaeological research conducted in 1875 by G.Pellegrini emerged numerous artifacts and ceramic flint, so many that the site of Rivoli Veronese could even be considered a ” workshop of prehistoric flint tools and weapons ” , ten years later, in 1885 , S. de’ Stefani public of the material found in the district of ” Castello” , the bronze finds from the Iron
Age . Subsequently, only in the 60s are shot studies and excavations of this area with numerous other findings that testify to the existence, in the Neolithic , a community can manage and control traffic along the Adige valley between the Alps and the Po Valley. At the end of the 70s there are further findings , perimeter walls , the basement of a church and weapons , which attest to the existence , between the X-XII century, a castle built of stone and wood on the top of the Rocca di Rivoli with important military functions . In 1797 Rivoli was the scene of a battle that Napoleon won against the Austrians , to commemorate this victory was erected by Napoleon on the battlefield a great twenty meters high column , a column that beat the Austrians in 1814 after the fall of Napoleon ; in its place now stands a mausoleum , near which are the remains of the French fighters . In 1848 the Piedmontese army troops fought and won against the Austrian troops . In the center of Rivoli , we find the museum with a collection of Napoleonic uniforms and documents of the time.
