Church of St George
Church of St George
in the south area of Montichiari
Church of St George, the original building was probably built in the second half of the eighth century and was part of a small monastery dedicated to St. George, patron saint of the Longobards, along with the church of San Zeno (no longer existing) were located where they were the first Montichiari residential settlements in medieval times, information confirmed also by the finding in the areas of two longobard necropolises. Currently the building has been built in a farm, but from a first research identifies some elements of the old building; It was recognized the small classroom where there are a large part of the walls and Romanesque and early medieval basement, a crypt with three apses of considerable size in both width and height. The church of San Giorgio, which in 1130 was found to be relevant to a small monastery, has several similarities with the construction of San Salvatore in Sirmione (already present in 765) and that of St. Benedict in Brescia.
