Perhaps of prehistoric origins, it developed in the Middle Ages as a border area between Trentino and Verona, guarded by castles and long walls that from Castel Pietra reached the river Adige with a door that was closed at night; it has been a battlefield on several occasions, particular was that of 1487 between Trentino and Veneto, where about six thousand Venetian soldiers perished or were captured.
