Castello di Marano

On the hill overlooking Pezza and San Rocco, near the church of Santa Maria della Valverde you can still see some ruins of the castle of Marano. The first time you mention a castle in the town of Marano is in a document dated 1213, then went destroyed during the earthquake of 1223 but was later rebuilt and used, so that it is found in a document dated 1276, complete with inner tower garrison of four guards; unusual in that between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the strong della Valpolicella were falling into disuse. Built for military reasons by from Marano, was then traded to the della Scala of Verona, showed interest Bartholomew and especially Frederick, son of Picardo, which is tied in particular to the Valpolicella, in 1311 he formed his lordship with the title of count Valpolicella after agreeing with the city of Verona terms that bordered the respective authority over the territory. In 1325 Frederick was part of a conspiracy against Grande della Scala, and for this he had to flee into exile and was probably the year in which the castle was destroyed.
