Monzambano Castle
Gonzaga castles scattered in every corner of the province have always been safe places well armed and those located on high ground, strategic observation posts.
Monzambano Castle is one of those well-preserved , situated on the hill above the center of the country , has an irregular because the walls with battlement , follow the trend of the land and are interrupted at the center of the country, where the pedestrian crossing and the porte cochere at one time provided a drawbridge , there are four towers and two masti places one in the south and one to the east , a time there was a walkway all around the walls made ̷̷from slabs of stone, but these were later used for the coating of the facade of the church of San Michele , reflecting remain on the walls of the holes where they had entered the slabs top brackets . Have recently been found inside the walls of the remains of a necropolis and tombs dating back to the ninth or tenth century.
The Monzambano Castle was probably built in the eleventh century at the behest of Matilda of Canossa in order to protect the population from the attacks of the barbarians , probably Hungarians. The castle was not a dwelling place for the lords of the country but was the site of the garrison of defense and in case of attacks also housed the population with livestock and food stocks ; inside there was also the need to water supply and the church of San Biagio and first parish of the place . In 1911 , with the defeat of Ponte Molino, became the property of the Scala family who held it until 1495 , when it passed to the hands of the Republic of Venice and then, at the end of the eighteenth century, the era of Napoleon , came under the control of Mantua.
