Church SS. Pietro e Paolo
The church is located immediately north of the villa of the Nonii Arii, built on the shore of the lake, which is one of the largest in the Garda area.
From the church SS. Pietro and Paolo, the ancient parish of Toscolano, depended, writes G.P. Brogiolo: in addition to Sant’Antonio dei Disciplinati and San Domenico of the Lateran canons of San Salvatore di Brescia, also the churches, probably of ancient foundation, of Santa Maria di Supina, San Michele of Degagna, San Nicolò di Cecina, San Giorgio di Roina (perhaps indirectly remembered in a document dated 983), San Sebastiano di Gaino with late medieval bell tower, San Benedetto (to refer to the possessions of the monastery of Leno, mentioned as early as 1041). …… Immediately to the north of the villa (and of the castrum vetus) stood the Pieve dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul (attested since 1040) and the church of Santa Maria known as del Benaco as it was built on the shore of the lake. Two hundred meters further north there was the church of Santo Stefano, in which in 1255 a property known as “Curterezio” is mentioned with a clear allusion to a royal court, ……..
Behind the parish church, towards the lake, is the church of Santa Maria del Benaco where a late medieval ciborium can be considered; the presence of a ciborium and the dedication to Santa Maria could suggest that it was the original church with the care of souls and that St. Peter and Paul from the funerary chapel near the church later became (before 1197) the titular church.
The present church was started on 16 March 1584 and completed in 1733 with the inclusion of the bells in the bell tower.
