Church Nativity Maria Vergine
Church Nativity Maria Vergine
Inside the castle of Polpenazze on the hills of Valtenesi
Church Nativity Maria Vergine is located inside the walls of the castle, on the top of the hill from its churchyard enjoys a beautiful panoramic view towards Lake Garda. Built at the end of the sixteenth century to replace the church of St. Peter, as Pope Urban VIII, it is then consecrated by Bishop Alberto Valier on October 8, 1585, when it was finished by the architect Brescia Todeschini, also engaged In Desenzano in those years; The facade we see is the result of a reconstruction of the baroque style of the architects Antonio and Giovanni Tagliaferri between 1898 and 1903. Inside there are five altars and paintings that adorn the aisles and the car of the triduums made in a neoclassical style by Leonardo Manzati. The number of altars seems to be due to the existence of several confraternities: the major is dedicated to the Virgin’s Nativity; One in San Rocco, on the right with the shrine depicting the saint, the present is the work of Louis Sigurtà 1782; One at the 18th-century Rosary, with a Madonna statue surrounded by fifteen wooden tablets depicting the mystery of the rosary; One to the Blessed Sacrament, on the left, with a painting by Louis Sigurtà of 1757 depicting Christ on the Cross, Mary, John and Magdalene; One to the Immaculate, XVIII century, representing the Immaculate among the Angels, by Pietro Ricchi, the Lucchese. Another painting is the one depicting the Santi Fermo e Rustico work by Pietro da Marone of the second half of the 16th century.
