Contrada Marocco
Contrada Marocco
in the medieval village of Riva under Rocchetta Mountain
Contrada Marocco is part of the medieval village, that built on the rocks at the base of Rocchetta Mountain near the city walls, which was the Quartiere Castello, one of the four districts where the citadel of Riva was divided into the Middle Ages (square Castle, square Lake, square of Middle and Square Church). The township, specifically, is named after the “marocche”, huge stone blocks resulting from an ancient landscaping of Rocchetta Mountain, which were then embedded in some buildings and characterized by narrow lanes and characteristic buildings once occupied by craftsmen.
