Medieval Civic Tower and castle
The Medieval Civic Tower of Calcinato is located in Piazza Repubblica with the remains of the castle, it is mentioned in the history of Brescia of the XIII century.
Medieval Civic Tower and castle: “Above the hill there is a castle with pits and high walls, a circuit of 60 steps, with derocated houses, with the door and at the time that Cappelletti stop in the land, stay in the castle to be there to put there his horses. Adjacent to the castle there is a beautiful square …. at the head of the square there is the parish church.” (V,G. da Lezze, il catastico bresciano 1609-1610). Fausto Lechi also writes about this: “The castle of Calcinato is known for the battle that took place in its vicinity between Cremonese and their allies escaped Brescia on 9 August 1201, and the connected ones in the “Societas comitis Narisii vel Sancti Faustini”. We can roughly say that the exiles were Ghibellines and the members of the society of S. Faustino guelfi ….; it was disastrous for the Brescian associates (we say guelfi), that they even lost the carroccio. When the Malatesta fell in 1419 and had to leave our territory, Calcinato was one of the large castelliche Carmagnola, then in the pay of Filippo Maria Visconti, assaulted and conquered. …. overcome the terrible crisis of the years 1509-17 the castle is no longer remembered, except for a symptom made of blood: in fact in it was killed a constable of the podestà of Brescia, Antonio Sanuto, together with his escort by popular reaction.”
