Pieve Santa Maria of Pontenove
Pieve Santa Maria of Pontenove, or Santa Maria of Nove, was part of the diocese of Brescia and was one of the oldest pillars of evangelization of the countryside of Lake Garda.
Pieve Santa Maria of Pontenove was on the Via Brixiensis linking Brescia with Verona, near a river Chiese crossing and, after a search on the archaeological zone, has confirmed the early Christian building. Pieve Santa Maria of Pontenove is the only church of the Garda where it was uncovered the baptistery. There are three phases of construction. The first building, which dates back to the fifth-sixth century also included a cemetery then remained in use until the twelfth century, it was then given a baptismal font hexagonal which was accessed via steps since that time, in Po Valley until the sixth century, it was in use baptism by immersion, the walls of the baptismal font were covered earthenware and was paved with a colorful mosaic depicting a jeweled cross flanked by the letters alpha and omega. The second period is detectable early Middle Ages, during which it was built the wall fence of the churchyard in front of the entrance of the church and a new building in front of the existing one with an inner octagonal baptistery, building dedicated to San Giovanni that was later demolished in the sixteenth century. The third construction phase concerns the near-total destruction of the early Christian church and the construction of the present one, with a rectangular plan that is shorter than three meters wide and more than about four meters of the previous one but with the main axis coincident; its interior is divided into three naves ending each with a semicircular apse and roof wooden trusses, the facade has a central rose window and a simple portal with the coat of arms of the archpriest Averoldi.
The circumscription of the church of Santa Maria di Pontenove covered an area between the river Chiese west; The diocese of Verona east (pieve Sant’Emiliano in Padenghe and pieve San Zeno in Lonato); pieve Sant’Andrea in Maderno to the north and pieve di San Pancrazio di Montichiari in the south.
To pieve Santa Maria of Pontenove came for baptism and major festivity the inhabitants of Prevalle, Calvagese, Carzago della Riviera, Mocasina, Bedizzole, San Vito di Bedizzole, Ponte San Marco, Calcinato and Calcinatello.
