Varone Waterfalls
Three kilometers from Riva del Garda, in the locality of Tenno, is the observation point from the bottom of the waterfalls, which passes from the Lower Cave.
Varone Waterfalls they were inaugurated in 1874 in the presence of Prince Nicholas of Montenegro, who was on holiday on Lake Garda; since then various personalities have come to visit them: Prince Umberto II, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Emperor Franz Joseph, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, and others.
With the disappearance of the Quaternary del Garda glacier, the valley of the lower Sarca and Lake Garda is formed and the glacier waters from the Tenno and Ballino valleys have eroded the rock and flow into the Riva basin; in thousands of years the water has corroded the rocky walls forming the “ravine” of the waterfall that today is 55 meters long, the overall jump of the waterfall is 98 meters.
