Walls of Bardolino
Walls of Bardolino they originated around the ninth century, with the authorization of King Berengario, to defend the numerous raids of barbarians and common rivals.
Walls of Bardolino they have undergone humble changes throughout history, up to the shape and size taken during the Scaligeri period; defended from the invasions the inhabited nucleus together with the Scaligero castle of the IX century, the city walls had two doors, one to the south and one to the north of the historical center (San Giovanni gate has remained intact) and four towers, with the open side towards the lake. A map of 1439 of the State Archives of Venice shows the Scaliger conformation with the church of San Severo of the IX century and of San Zeno outside the walls. In 1100 Bardolino appears as an autonomous municipality and in 1222 a strongly active fishermen’s guild was active, so much so that the construction of their houses gave shape to the inhabited area, as they were built in a linear way one behind the other starting from the ones on the beach, with the characteristic comb arrangement; provision that facilitated the transport of fishing boats to the shore.
